As we begin to celebrate the successes of Penn’s Making History Campaign, 693 alumni, parents, and friends returned to campus in recognition of the many volunteers who gave so much of their time to the University and to the Campaign. Their dedication elevates our programs and our institution.
The annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, held this year on March 2 in Houston Hall, serves to thank our Penn volunteers for the time, talent, and tireless energy they’ve selflessly given to the University over the preceding year. These volunteers support all areas of Penn, playing a vital role in everything from events to recruitment. The increased engagement of alumni, parents,and friends not only played a role in the success of the Making History Campaign and Penn, it was a goal in itself.

Seven years ago, Penn kicked off Making History, one of the largest fundraising campaigns in American higher education. The goal was ambitious: $3.5 billion. Even more ambitious was the vision: to raise Penn from excellence to eminence.
Making History reached its financial target 16 months ago, more than a year before its end date. But the momentum was strong, donors were enthusiastic, and the fundraising continued through December 31, 2012. The final Campaign tally will be announced February 28, and on April 19 the University community will celebrate the success of this remarkable effort at Penn Park.

A sell-out crowd of more than 500 alumni and friends joined Penn President Amy Gutmann and Professors Marwan M. Kraidy and Dorothy Roberts for the final Engaging Minds lecture series event of the calendar year, held December 1 at Cipriani in New York City.

This civic ideal has shaped the University’s core values, influencing Penn’s longstanding commitment to community engagement—a commitment that has been embraced by the University’s Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships.

There are many ways to uphold a lifelong commitment to Penn and its ideals, as the diverse biographies and accomplishments of the alumni award recipients honored at the 78th Annual Alumni Award of Merit Gala prove. The black-tie event, held the Friday of Homecoming Weekend at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, welcomed more than 300 alumni and guests in celebration of the honorees’ unwavering commitment to Penn and its missions.
